PIL seeks to preserve ecology of HC Bench

June 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 16, 2016 04:52 pm IST - Chennai:

The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Registrar General of the court to file a status report on the issue of replanting trees and preventing flow of drainage from nearby villages into a pond located on the campus of its Madurai Bench.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan passed the direction on a Public Interest Litigation petition moved by a Madurai-based advocate, M. Karl Marx, seeking constitution of a committee headed by a sitting High Court judge to conduct a detailed study and provide suggestions to preserve the environment and ecology of the Madurai Bench.

Claiming that the present plea was not against bringing the Madurai Bench under the security of CISF as per the First Bench’s order, the petitioner alleged that trees were being compromised and cut for building infrastructure for the Central force. The case was posted to July 19.
