Fifteen post offices in Chennai and its suburbs will start selling picture postcards from August.
On the decision of the Department of Posts, officials said though several retailers sold picture postcards, the post offices would be the natural choice. Since many visitors to the city, particularly foreigners, are likely to come to post offices for using other services, it makes sense to also sell picture postcards.
Besides the nine head post offices in the city and suburbs, the postcards would be available at the Anna Nagar, Adyar, Ashok Nagar and Flower Bazaar post offices.
On a trial basis, the sale of picture postcards was launched at the Meenambakkam and Mamallapuram post offices last month. About 200 cards have since been sold. Nearly 30 varieties of picture postcards depicting landmarks such as Government Museum and Central Railway Station in Chennai are available for sale.
“We have outsourced the pictures and the cards would come with a glossy finish. We expect the sales to go up in August when the city gets more tourists,” said an official. The cost of a picture postcard will be Rs.10.
Postmaster General (Chennai City Region) M.S. Ramanujan said there were proposals to sell stationery items and 11 types of envelopes in head post offices and some sub post offices from July 1. The water proof envelopes would come in various sizes. These envelopes would have foam and bubble layers to suit various products. They would also be sold at post offices near colleges and universities.
From August, all the head post offices would start selling the thematic set of stamps in a decorative frame. It is now available only at the Philately Bureau on Anna Salai and the price starts from Rs.100.
