The tapping of phones of political leaders is an “assault on civil and democratic rights of the public,” Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja said here on Saturday, and demanded a detailed inquiry.
The government should explain as to who had authorised the tapping and the purpose behind the “undemocratic” practice. “We are not living in a military regime. It is an undemocratic practice. There is every possibility that phones may have been tapped for political gain,” he said at a press conference.
On the controversy surrounding Indian Premier League, he said only a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe could bring out the truth. Every day, fresh controversies were surfacing. Allegations were also being levelled against two Union Cabinet Ministers.
“Cricket is one of the popular games. It is sad that the sporting event, especially IPL, was hijacked by people for money laundering and betting. Money was flowing from everywhere, particularly from questionable sources,” said Mr. Raja.
In the wake of the controversy, the government should ponder making changes in the sports policy and redefining the role of the Sports Ministry.
Asked whether Left parties would ensure floor coordination when the cut motion is moved in Parliament, he said: “There is nothing like floor coordination. The BJP has also taken up the issue of price rise so there could be some coincidence and convergence.”
