Postgraduate students of the city’s three medical colleges and Government Chengalpattu Medical College met with health minister C. Vijaya Baskar, health secretary J. Radhakrishnan and director of medical education S. Geethalaksmi, on Saturday evening, to discuss the issue of hike in their stipend.
For months now, the students have been demanding an increase in their stipend of Rs. 17,400, and have staged demonstrations.
The meeting took place at Madras Medical College in the presence of the college dean as well as the dean of Government Stanley Medical College.
Following the meeting, the students decided to postpone their token strike originally scheduled for Monday. “The minister assured us a hike would be implemented once the Chief Minister gives her approval,” said a student.
