People cancel travel plans to Nepal: agents

April 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - CHENNAI:

About 70 travellers, mostly pilgrims, from Chennai are reportedly safe in Nepal where a devastating earthquake left hundreds dead on Saturday.

Two travel agencies confirmed they had contacted their guests at their hotels and said they are trying to make alternative arrangements to fly them back home.

“One airline agreed to shift the tickets to Sunday but we are unable to get any response from the other airline,” said a tour operator, who sent 200 persons from Chennai and other places in the State to Nepal.

“Around 140 persons from that group, including Srirangam Mutt pontiff Jeeyar Swamigal, left Nepal just before the quake and reached Delhi on Saturday evening,” she said.

Meanwhile, several travellers have cancelled their upcoming trips to Nepal, said travel agents.
