Pedestrians out on one limb

Lack of police personnel and fast-moving traffic make a deadly combination in Ramapuram

As traffic policemen have not been deployed near the DLF IT Park in Ramapuram on Mount – Poonamallee High Road, where the flow of traffic is continuous and fast. Pedestrians crossing this section are at high risk for accidents.

There are more than 150 companies and 8,000 employees at the IT park. As these companies have different working hours and shifts, employees keep entering and exiting the IT park all through the day.

Most of the time, the security personnel of the IT park regulate traffic during the morning and evening rush hour to help their staff cross the junction. The other pedestrians have to fend for themselves.

“The stretch is wide and well-laid. As there are no policemen and zebra-crossing, motorists drive at high speed,” says S. Ramkumar, a resident of Ramapuram.

Mount – Poonamallee High Road, which is maintained by the State Highways, has a continuous flow of traffic throughout the day. There are many residential localities along the stretch. It connects to Bangalore Highway (NH:04) via Kundrathur and Poonamallee.

“Steps will be taken to ease the traffic flow and ensure safety of pedestrians,” says a Corporation official.
