Pedestrians crossing Anna Salai near Chellammal Women’s College at Guindy have complained to the Chennai Traffic Police (CTP) that motorists don’t pay attention to the pedestrain signals on the section.
This section, which leads to Little Mount and Chennai International Airport, is a one-way. The CTP has installed two pedestrians signals — one towards St. Thomas Mount and Chennai International Airport and the other, towards Little Mount.
Earlier, in the absence of pedestrian signals and CTP personnel, students of Chellammal Women’s College and pedestrians found it difficult to cross the busy stretch.
Now, despite the presence of signals and personnel, the problem persists.
“The personnel manning the stretch near the traffic signals remain mute spectators as motorists drive past ignoring these signals. We have to signal to the motorists to stop,” S. Gayathri, a college-student, said.
In October 2016, three students of Chellammal Women’s College died and four others suffered injuries when a water tanker ploughed into a crowd near the SPIC office on Anna Salai. The three students were part of a group of five that tried to cross the busy Anna Salai, just opposite the college.
Pedestrians demand that the traffic police personnel should help the students and senior citizens to cross the stretch. When contacted, Chennai Traffic Police officials promised to do the needful.
