The Chennai Corporation will construct pedestrian plazas at Luz Chruch Road and Pondy Bazaar. Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Friday informed the Corporation Council that disabled-friendly structures will be in place in all new pedestrian facilities including the plaza.
“The pedestrian plaza will facilitate access to commercial neighbourhoods for a large number of people,” he said. New footpaths will be designed to facilitate unhindered pedestrian movement from one end of a road to the other. Roads that have space will get cycle tracks.
The Council on Friday also approved the third phase of Chennai mega city development mission.
A total of Rs.386.61 crore has been allocated for integrated development of roads. Development of footpaths will be made in such roads at an estimated cost of Rs.40.94 crore in the added zones of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur and Perungudi. The Mayor assured the council that bollards will be erected on footpaths to prevent vehicle movement in some areas. The height of newly designed footpaths will be six inches, with suitable design for easy entry and exit of residents in each building on the road. Junction boxes and pillar boxes on the stretches will be relocated.
The highest amount for footpaths has been allocated for Perungudi zone (Rs.18.62 crore) and the highest amount for roads has been allocated for Ambattur zone (Rs.87.44 crore).
Work on 314 roads has been completed at a cost of Rs.209.54 crore under the Chennai mega city development mission phase I. As many as 489 roads have been completed under Chennai mega city development mission phase II. The remaining work will be taken up after Metrowater completes other civic development works.
The work on 71 world class roads will be a stepping stone for improved roads and footpaths in the city, said Mr. Duraisamy.
