The Chennai Corporation will soon acquire patta lands to lay a road in Nolambur, a newly added area in ward 143 of Valasaravakkam zone. A resolution to this effect was placed before the Council for its approval, on Tuesday.
The road running via Sri Ram Nagar Main Road was a kuccha facility for the most part. Some of the property owners had raised objections to the civic body’s proposal to lay a road connecting Koyambedu to the DABC Apartment Complex.
The lands are being acquired by invoking the urgency clause under the Land Acquisition Act, as it is required for public use, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy said. This would help speed up the process of land acquisition.
The urgency clause is usually invoked when lands are being acquired by the civic body for construction of flyovers and widening roads. A planner said most arterial roads in the city had been widened by using this clause.
The civic body has already written to the Tiruvallur district collector, seeking administrative sanction.
The land acquisition would cost the Corporation Rs. 87.37 lakh. Sources in the civic body said this provision would be used in an extensive manner in the newly expanded areas where new roads are to be formed and smaller roads widened.
Conversion of grama natham lands
The Mayor also announced that the civic body would take steps to convert grama natham lands, on which houses had been constructed in newly expanded areas, to patta lands. This was in response to a question by Councillor E. Chandrasekaran of ward 28, who wanted to know if planning permission would be granted for residents who had constructed on grama natham lands. Mr. Duraisamy said, according to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority rules, it was not possible to do so.
