An hour-long spell of rain on Tuesday night left the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) partly clogged with slush.

IMH staff said a drain had overflowed on an adjoining road in Ayanavaram, and left some parts of the institute’s premises unusable.

“Ayanavaram Road and Raji Street, which connect Medavakkam Tank Road, Ayanavaram to New Avadi Road, have been widened and re-laid. After the shower last night, water flowed from this stretch on to Medavakkam Tank Road and entered IMH. Somehow, it got mixed up with sewage overflow,” said an IMH staff member.

Another staff member said the entire area was stinking because of the stagnant water and the overflowing drain, and no one had attended to the problem.

A local resident said the situation had been really bad on Tuesday morning, but that the road had begun to dry later in the day.

IMH officials said the problem on their premises was attended to immediately.
