For the first time, a three-day paragliding festival that is open to all will be conducted in Yelagiri Hills from 11 to 13 September.

The event jointly organised by Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), Yelagiri Adventure Sports Association (YASA) and the Vellore District Administration will also enable people to take part in other adventure sports such as trekking, rock climbing and biking.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Tourism Secretary V. Irai Anbu said these events will be conducted annually to popularise lesser known tourist spots such as the Yelagiri Hills and to nurture and promote adventure sports among the youth.

C. Jayakrishnan, Joint Secretary, YASA, said, “This is the second time we are conducting a paragliding event in the Yelagiri Hills. Last year, only trained pilots were allowed to glide from the hill top. Around 45 pilots made use of the facility and this time the public can make use of their experience."

The participants have to trek at least one kilometre to reach the top. Each joyride will last for 15 to 20 minutes and the entry fee is Rs.1,000 per person. There is no age-limit for the participants. However, they should not be weak or obese, Mr. Jayakrishnan said.

Besides establishing an adventure sports complex and amphitheatre in Yelagiri, TTDC has allocated Rs.11 crore for setting up new facilities such as a boat house in Nilavur and a travellers’ bungalow. A nature park has been inaugurated while the existing boat house has been upgraded.
