The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a one-man commission of inquiry to probe the Moulivakkam building collapse here on Saturday.
Retired High Court Judge R. Reghupathy would head the probe panel that would, among other things, go into the circumstances that led to the building collapse, fix responsibility for the accident and suggest measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents, an official release here on Thursday said.
The government would act on the recommendations of the commission, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said.
The institution of the judicial probe into what has been one of the worst man-made disasters the city has witnessed is significant as it has raised a host of troubling issues concerning the town planners, architects, regulators and builders.
The massive collection of debris which is still being removed even five days after the disaster has also brought to the fore other challenges to the rescue and relief teams.
On the sixth day of rescue operation on Thursday, more than a dozen bodies, including that of a child, were retrieved by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team members from the debris, taking the death toll to 61, including 41 men and 20 women.
