R. Kumar, Inthalur village panchayat president, is reported to have absconded with his family.
Achirapakkam police have registered a case based on a complaint from Ambigapathi, block development officer (BDO), Chithamur Block, and are investigating.
According to the police, in August this year, vice president of the Inthalur panchayat, Dhanasekaran, informed the BDO that Kumar had failed to turn up at the panchayat office since July.
Subsequently, it came to light that Kumar had vacated his house and moved out of the village along with his family. He had also obtained transfer certificates from the private school in which his sons (twins) were studying.
Ambigapathi lodged a complaint with the police in the first week of September stating that Mr. Kumar was missing. The police registered the complaint in their community service register and a copy of this was issued to the BDO’s office.
A few days later, the BDO received a letter, purportedly written by Kumar, stating that he did not want to continue as the president of the village panchayat in view of the ‘financial crisis’ faced by his family. However the official chose to disregard this letter.
On Wednesday, the police registered a ‘man missing’ case based on the complaint lodged in September.
