Padma Shri for BARC director

Sekhar Basu, director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and chief executive of the Nuclear Recycle Board, has been conferred the Padma Shri award.

Dr. Basu has headed the BARC facilities in Kalpakkam since 1988, and is one of the architects of the 80 MWt compact pressurised water reactors that will power Arihant, the country’s nuclear-powered submarine.

He was also given the responsibility of the nuclear recycle programme and constructed reprocessing and waste management plants in Tarapur and Kalpakkam.

Dr. Basu has a number of publications to his credit. He is now working on expansion programmes in the food and health sector of BARC, and is also involved in an international fusion reactor programme, ITER, France.
