Packers-and-movers firms asked to pay up for damaged goods

June 02, 2014 12:58 pm | Updated 12:58 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A packers-and-movers company and a road-lines firm, which damaged the car and refrigerator of a senior bank officer while transporting them from Chennai to Secunderabad, has been asked by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum–North to pay compensation.

While directing the firms to pay Rs. 80,000 as compensation, the forum has also ordered them to pay over Rs. 2 lakh or repair the car and fridge and hand them over to the complainant.

The petitioner, M.C. Kandasamy, working as an assistant general manager at UCO Bank, had approached Agarwal Packers and Movers in Koyambedu on August 2, 2011, and paid Rs. 42,400 for the transportation of his car and household articles to Secunderabad. The articles were delivered to him on August 17, 2011, with several of them damaged.

The car was not handed over as it had been involved in an accident while being taken to Kaveripakkam in Vellore for loading, following which Mr. Kandasamy lodged a complaint. The forum directed Agarwal Packers and Movers and DRS Dilip Roadlines Pvt. Ltd. in Secunderabad to repair the car and fridge or pay the compensation amount.
