The proposal for construction of a multi-level car parking in the T. Nagar bus terminus was dropped from the draft for the proposed urban redevelopment of T. Nagar, which was finalised on Wednesday.
Other key proposals that were finalised before the last public consultation are part of the final report, said an official of Chennai Corporation. The consultant made a presentation on the redevelopment on Wednesday and the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd. (TNUIFSL) will hand over the report to the Corporation shortly.
Some proposals, such as a four-lane road connecting Doraiswamy subway and G.N. Chetty Road, running deep below Panagal Park with a multi-level underground parking, recommended in the 2010 interim plan, had already been dropped before the public consultations.
In 2009, the Corporation had requested TNUIFSL to facilitate redevelopment of T. Nagar to streamline traffic flow, integrate commercial activities and improve environmental quality. The TNUIFSL appointed private consultants to work out the plans. A study in this regard has been carried out in a seven-square kilometre area around Panagal Park. The final draft has been readied after collecting feedback from residents by holding three consultations in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The Chennai Corporation Council will discuss the proposals and the civic body is likely to take up any of the proposed projects including pedestrianisation of Thyagaraya Road, South Usman Road and areas around Panagal Park, dedicated hawker zones in pedestrian areas, redesigning of Panagal Park, integrated traffic signals and multi-level car parking.
According to the interim proposals, two additional bus terminuses near Valluvar Kottam and Saidapet were proposed to be built. Measures to improve storm water drainage and public conveniences have also been proposed.
The proposals will increase the pedestrian circulation space, create space for vendors and decrease congestion. Modifications to the land-use plan or revision of Floor Space Index, which were referred to in the inception report, have not been included in the final draft.
