The Chennai Corporation has included over one lakh food handlers in its annual de-worming programme for students.
The civic body on Monday began the distribution of de-worming tablets for 7 lakh school students in the city.
Launching the distribution of tablets at a Chennai Corporation School in CIT Nagar, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said the programme will promote public health and hygiene. After distributing the tablets in all the 283 Chennai Corporation Schools, the civic body’s health department, with the assistance of private schools, will distribute the tablets to other students free of cost.
“The de-worming programme will be held for one week in all government, government-aided and private schools, ICDS centres, hostels and orphanages from August 11. This programme has been on for the past 15 years,” said Dr. P. Kuganantham, city health officer.
In the second phase, one lakh food handlers including those in luxury hotels and street vending facilities will be covered. Self-help group members in Amma Canteens will also receive the Albendazole 400 mg tablet, which is recommended for persons above two years.
The drug has no side effects, according to the World Health Organisation.
“We also teach students the importance of hand washing, clipping nails and wearing footwear. De-worming in children prevents anaemia, increases IQ, improves learning skills and promotes a positive attitude,” said Dr. Kuganantham.
