The Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association is organising a week-long programme on road safety to mark National Bone and Joint Day, which falls on August 4.
Blood donation camps, safety awareness initiatives for schoolchildren and distribution of pamphlets are some of the programmes planned.
“In India, on an average, 16 people die every hour due to road accidents. Despite laws such as those on wearing helmets and seatbelts, motorists continue to ride and drive in unsafe conditions,” said C. Raja Ravi Varma, president of the association.
Jumping traffic lights, not stopping at zebra crossings, drunken driving and other rash practices make the roads extremely dangerous, he said.
“The best way to ensure our roads are safe is by teaching students. We aim to sensitise about 3,000 children through our programme,” he said.
Road safety rally
Public awareness meetings, bike rallies and walkathons will be part of the initiative.
On August 4, a road safety rally will be held on Marina Beach from Gandhi statue to Kannagi statue from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., Dr. Varma said.
