From Thursday, you can cover the 27-km-long road from Vandalur in the south to Nemilichery in the west, in under 25 minutes. The new six-lane Outer Ring Road, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday, has been designed for such speeds.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also laid the foundation stone for phase II of the project from Nemilichery to Minjur.

The road that takes off at the NH 45 (Chennai-Tiruchy Highway), runs via the NH 4 (Chennai- Bangalore Highway) and lands near the NH 205 (Chennai-Tirupathi Highway) will considerably ease traffic congestion along the western periphery of the city and will help the growth of industrial hubs along the road.

At Vandalur, motorists can take the railway rotary bridge just before the zoo and take a right. While driving through Vandalur, motorists will reach Mannivakkam, take the service lane and enter the road.

It will be maintained for 17.5 years by the company that constructed it. The road will be a toll-free facility as the government is yet to take a decision on it.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated 34 bridges including those at Tholavedu in Tiruvallur district and Thazhuthali Kuppam and Kadapakkam in Kancheepuram district She inaugurated office buildings and travellers’ bungalows at a total cost of Rs. 1.2 crore.

Chief Secretary Mohan Verghese Chunkath, adviser to the State government Sheela Balakrishnan, and Highways Department Secretary Rajeev Ranjan were present.
