Karanaipuducherry, a sleepy hamlet near Nandivaram-Guduvancheri, is home to openbill storks this migratory season.
The winged visitors, who generally forage in wetlands like other storks, can be seen landing on the village’s green fields and flying low, looking for feeding ground in the mornings and late in the afternoon. Unusually, common egrets have also been found in large numbers this season.
Similarly, those driving down the Kelambakkam-Kovalam Road on the southern outskirts of Chennai in the morning and evening may be able to spot black-winged stilts, pelicans, black-caped kingfishers and other migratory species.
With backwaters seeping in from Muttukadu, this lagoon supports a lot of wetland birds such as spot-billed pelicans, painted storks and cormorants, said K.V.R.K. Thirunaranan, founder, The Nature Trust.
