A 25-year-old woman from Kerala who allegedly cheated people, including three men whom she married, of lakhs of rupees and gold jewellery was arrested from Bangalore on Saturday and brought to Chennai on Sunday. Till date, she had cheated seven persons.
According to police, Saravanan of Adyar lodged a complaint stating that Shahanaz had promised to marry him. She took Rs 25,000 from him stating that she wanted to appear for an examination and later a two-sovereign chain claiming that she needed it for her friend’s marriage. When she did not return either, he tried calling her but found the phone switched off.
A special team was formed to nab the woman. Based on a tip-off, she was arrested in Bangalore on Saturday.
She was brought to Chennai and during interrogation, revealed that she was a native of Pathanamthitta in Kerala.
She had married one Siddique when she was in 10 standard but got separated after a misunderstanding. She worked in a garment shop in Kerala for a while and then came to Chennai in 2005. Here, she took up a job at a supermarket in Vepery owned by Shamsudin.
In 2007, she married a cinema art director in Tiruchi but got separated from him in 2009. She then resumed work at the supermarket. Shahanaz borrowed Rs.1.85 lakh from Shamsudin on the pretext of buying a house. She then went missing.
After this, she joined a BPO in Velachery. During this time, she came into contact with many men over phone. She got acquainted with Saravanan of Adyar, Raja of T Nagar, Saravanan of Tiruvotriyur, Manikandan of Porur and Prasanna of Pulianthope.
She even married Manikandan and Prasana and cheated them of money, say police. “We found that the victims had filed complaints in their respective police stations,” said a police source.
