July 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

A former student of the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University was arrested on Thursday for ransacking the office of Vice-Chancellor E. Gayathri on July 24 and threatening her.

According to the police, the watchman of the institution informed Ms. Gayathri on Monday morning that the locks of her office and adjacent rooms were broken. She immediately informed senior police officers about the incident. Threat letters on a chart and a cinema poster were left behind on her table and in the adjacent room.

Police investigations zeroed in on R. Barani Kumar (25), a resident of R.A. Puram. “He had learnt mridangam between 2010 and 2013 and then morsing in 2014. During this period, he was removed from college for irregularities,” said a senior police officer.

Officials also reportedly closed down the canteen run by his mother Anjali on the university premises.

It is also suspected that the officials did not send convocation letters to him and a few of his friends. Police suspect it to be an act of revenge.
