Every day , biomedical waste agencies collect 9 to 10 tonnes of waste from four districts – Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvallur and Chennai
1,010 hospitals and clinics dispose of the waste
60 per cent of biomedical waste generated disposed of properly
Source segregation at hospitals, clinics –
Colour coded bags are used:
Black – discarded medicine
Yellow – human tissues, skin, cotton and gauze, amputated parts
Blue – Needles, broken glass, sharps, blades
Red – Gloves, masks, blood bags, caps, all plastic items
Green – garbage from hospitals
Two organisations handle biomedical waste - GJ Multiclave at Sriperumbudur and Ramky at Maduranthakam taluk
Around 6 tonnes of waste is incinerated
Around 1 tonne is made ready for reuse and the rest is sent for recycling
After incineration, the ash is sent to Tamil Nadu Waste Management Limited which sends it to a designated landfill for chemical waste
