A KSRTC Airavat bus coming from Bengaluru caught fire near Poonamallee, Chennai on Saturday. Passengers and crew of the bus escaped unhurt after they noticed smoke from the rear side of bus.

The bus, carrying 42 passengers, departed from Bengaluru last night. At around 8 a.m., when the bus was nearing the Poonamallee junction connecting Nazarethpet and Thirumazhisai, a passenger noticed the smoke from rear side of the bus. Immediately the driver stopped the bus stopped and the passengers who woke from their sleep ran towards the exit.

The fire leapt forward and engulfed the entire bus. The incident triggered panic among motorists and passersby who were moving on the road during peak hour. Water tenders were pressed into service from Poonamallee, Avadi and Ambattur. Further investigation is on.
