A private bus crashed into a Chennai Metro Rail construction site at Meenambakkam on Grand Southern Trunk Road on Wednesday morning. No one was injured in the accident, nor was there any major damage to property.

The police said 30 people were travelling in the air-conditioned omni bus from Neyveli to Koyambedu. When the vehicle neared the traffic signal around 6.30 a.m., it rammed the barricade and plunged into a four-feet-deep pit before landing on the concrete structures after the driver reportedly lost control.

Quoting CMRL contract workers, police said the bus was overspeeding. The front portion of the vehicle was severely damaged. All the passengers managed to get out to safety, workers at the site said. A crane pulled out the bus from the accident site, but as it caused a traffic snarl during the morning rush hour, it was stopped. The recovery resumed a few hours later and normal flow of traffic resumed after 10.30 a.m.

The St. Thomas Mount traffic police registered a case and launched a search for the driver who abandoned the vehicle after the accident.
