Old electrical meters to be replaced

Old electrical meters in the State will be replaced with new meters in a phased manner, Electricity Minister Natham R. Viswanathan told the Assembly on Monday.

Responding to a question by CPI (M) floor leader A Soundararajan, the Minister said as many as 1.20 crore meters were in use. Of these, there were 90 lakh single-phase meters and 30 lakh three-phase meters. He said while it would cost Rs 785 to replace a single-phase meter, replacing a three-phase meter would cost Rs 2,600 . “It will totally cost the government Rs 3,360 crore to replace meters” the Minister said. He said the Centre granted of Rs 1,025 crore under RAPDRP (Restructured Accelerated Power Development Reforms Programme).
