Unknown persons reportedly ransacked the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University Vice-Chancellor office.
Threat notice to Vice-Chancellor E. Gayathri, a veena maestro, was also found in two rooms of the university that is located close to the official residences of Ministers and High Court judges.
“Around 7.30 a.m. on Monday, the watchman of the institution informed me that the locks of my office and adjacent rooms were broken,” Ms. Gayathri told The Hindu. She immediately informed senior police officers about the incident.
“There was a chart on my table and someone had written that they would kill me. A similar threat letter was also written on the back side of a film poster left in the adjacent room. There was a signature that was not very legible,” she said.
The framed photograph of Ms. Gayathri along with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and calendars in the room were damaged. “The almirah was also broken. All the books and files were scattered in the room. It appeared as if they were looking for something, but nothing is missing. We repaired the damaged articles after the police checked and lifted fingerprints,” said Ms. Veena, who suspects that the miscreants would have gained entry into the campus by scaling a wall in the backyard.
The Vice-Chancellor had terminated the contracts of a few staff members recently. “There is no permanent position in this university; most of the employees are on contract. Action is usually taken against employees who are corrupt or commit some mischief that can cause problem in the institution or among students,” she said.
Meanwhile, an officer attached to the Foreshore Estate police station said that a case had been registered based on a complaint filed by K. Akhilandeshwari (48), Registrar of the university. Further investigation is on.
