Nurturing talents in science

On Wednesday, at a ‘science reality show’ conducted by Chennai Corporation and Quest Explore Discover (QED), students from Corporation schools yet again displayed their aptitude in science.

According to Uma Mahesh of QED, at the quarter finals held on Feb 16, students from 88 Chennai Corporation Middle Schools competed in two rounds. 40 teams of 3 students each – from Class VI, VII and VIII – qualified for the next round and 10 teams competed in the semi-finals. “We had questions from the Samacheer Kalvi syllabus, with three rounds of knowledge-based questions,” she said.

Class VI student R. Sriram, who was part of the team from Chennai Higher Secondary School, Vanniya Teynampet that won the first prize, wants to be a scientist. “My brother is more intelligent than me and I want him to be a scientist too,” he said.

The winning team received national savings certificates of Rs. 25,000 each. The second prize was certificates of Rs. 20,000 and third certificates for Rs. 15,000.

Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur and Deputy Commissioner, Education Department of Corporation, Shilpa Prabhakar were present at the event.
