Nursing student fights for life after knife attack

A nursing student is battling for life at a hospital after she was assaulted by a man she knew at her college in Chromepet on Thursday afternoon. The 19-year-old was given nearly 20 stitches after she was injured on her face and scalp by the man who used a sharp knife.

Gnana Monica of Kandigai Village, Uthiramerur in Kancheepuram District, was a third-year student of B.Sc (Nursing) at Sree Balaji College of Nursing, C.L.C. Works Road. 18 months ago, she befriended Saravana Kumar of Cuddalore, currently, a final-year Commerce student.

They were in constant touch with each other for a while. Her parents, however, were unhappy about the friendship and are reported to have reprimanded Saravana Kumar in addition to instructing their daughter to stay away from him.

For the past six months, Monica had avoided Saravana Kumar’s calls, which reportedly infuriated the latter. On Thursday, he came to Chennai from Cuddalore on a motorcycle.

He managed to sneak into the premises and hid behind a tree. Around 1.15 p.m., he saw Monica walking towards her hostel mess for lunch and he pulled out a knife and attacked her. The bleeding girl collapsed on the spot.

Staff and other students overpowered Saravana Kumar and beat him up before handing him over to Chromepet police. Monica was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of Balaji Medical College and Hospital.

Saravana Kumar has been arrested under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC.
