The anti-gangster operations squad of the Chennai police arrested gangster Kundrathur Vairam, wanted in 12 cases including murder, on Monday morning at Gerugambakkam.

The team also arrested five other notorious anti-social elements as part of a crackdown underway in the city.

According to the police, Vairam was involved in the murder of one Anbu in 2003 and his son Madan in 2012. He was also one of the main suspects in the murder of P.P.G. Kumaran in Sriperambudur, when bombs were thrown on the car of the businessman who was then hacked to death.

On Monday morning, the team received information that Vairam was hiding in a house in Gerugambakkam. When the police tried to arrest him, he resisted and he was then arrested at gunpoint.

The anti-gangster operations squad also arrested Samson, Ghouse Basha, Kalaimani, Thangamani and Sathya Rao.

Since June, a total of 28 anti-social elements have been arrested and 18 have surrendered.
