The India meteorological department on Monday announced the onset of the northeast monsoon.
According to the department, the southwest monsoon has further withdrawn from the remaining parts of the country, Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Simultaneously, the northeast monsoon rains commenced over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Monday.
“There is a well-marked low lying area 200 km east of Chennai,” said Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director-general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
Isolated, heavy to very heavy rain would occur at a few places in coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Kerala during the next 48 hours. Isolated heavy rain may also occur over interior Tamil Nadu during the same period.
On Monday, observatories such as Nungambakkam, Meenambakkam, Sholavaram, Red Hills and DGP office recorded more than 7 cm of rain. Districts such as Krishnagiri, Perambalur, Ramanathapuram and Tanjavur have 15 per cent excess rainfall.
