Will the city be cleaner in future? Here’s a chance: Chennai Corporation has constituted an ‘afternoon special force’ for conservancy operations. The Council on Thursday also passed a resolution to limit conservancy operations to between 6.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.
Currently, conservancy operations are being carried out in two shifts. Workers are active from 6.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. in the first shift. They return at 2.30 p.m. and work till 5 p.m. in the second shift.
Workers will return home at 1.30 p.m. under the new single shift system. The new system is expected to ease the pressure on conservancy workers and improve efficiency. After a single shift is implemented in the city, the civic body will use 10 per cent of the workforce as ‘afternoon special force’ to clean neighbourhoods from 1.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
“The workers of the special force will give priority to neighbourhoods with pressing garbage problems. After a complaint is registered by residents, the team will visit the area. The system will not be implemented in privatised zones,” said an official.
The new system has been implemented following demands by conservancy workers. The civic body will continue to carry out night conservancy in all market areas under the new system. Separate teams for arterial roads will continue conservancy operations.
