Even though there was no adequate rain in Tamil Nadu for the last three years, the AIADMK government has taken measures to supply water to people in all areas, Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani told the Assembly on Wednesday. Replying to a calling attention motion moved by the members of the DMK, CPI, CPI(M), Puthiya Tamizhagam, PMK and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), the Minister said DMK had organised demonstrations only now as elections to the Assembly was approaching.
“When officials made an enquiry, they found that water was regularly supplied. The DMK had brought people from other areas for the demonstration,” the Minister said. Mr. Velumani said Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had the farsightedness to rent private wells in Tiruvallur district to supply 100 MLD of water, taking into consideration that the catchment areas of Sholavaram, Poondi, Puzhal and Chembarambakkam had not received adequate rain.
The number of tankers supplying water has been increased from 350 to 560. The water tankers run 5,200 trips a day. The Minister said the AIADMK government had allotted Rs. 19,404 crore for supplying water for local bodies in four years against Rs. 7,280 crore spent by the DMK government during the corresponding period.
