The Corporation on Monday rejected a proposal for acquisition of land for the redesigned flyover on Usman Road.
Speaking to residents at a public consultation on Monday, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said “the project will be implemented on Corporation road without any acquisition of private land.”
With the proposal being rejected, the ramps will be redesigned to be seven-metre wide to facilitate construction without land acquisition.
Three options for design proposed on Monday involved acquisition of plots of land, ranging in size from 3,654 sq. m. to 4,556 sq. m., on Usman Road. The consultant had provided nine options for easing traffic congestion on the 3.5-km stretch connecting Anna Salai and Mahalingapuram. Three of them were shortlisted based on the feasibility study that covered traffic volume count, pedestrian volume count and tracing of the origin and destination of vehicles on the stretch. The study revealed that eighty per cent of the vehicles using the two flyovers had T. Nagar as their destination or origin.
One of the options that are still under consideration involves the construction of a flyover connecting Boag Road and Habibullah Road junctions. The option which will include junction improvements and construction of pedestrian subways is likely to improve the corridor from Mahalingpuram to Anna Salai, said an official of Chennai Corporation.
“The dimensions of the structure should be designed to ease traffic congestion in the long-term. But we do not want land acquisition,” said K. Sekar, a resident of T. Nagar.
