Nine persons were arrested on charges of gambling, at a lodge in Mannadi on Tuesday night.

Acting on the instructions of Joint Commissioner of Police (North) N.K. Senthamarai Kannan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Flower Bazaar) T.S. Anbu formed a special team to search a lodge.

The team members, in plainclothes, moved into the lodge posing as guests and made a surprise check in a couple of rooms.

Nine persons were playing cards. A sum of Rs.1.4 lakh cash was seized from the scene. The accused were taken to the court for remand.

“We had specific information that gambling was being allowed in the lodge. Steps have been taken to cancel the Public Resort Licence of the lodge. Action is being taken against the owner of the lodge,” Mr. Anbu said.

Warning

Surprise checks would be conducted in lodges and owners/managers were warned not to allow gambling. “Even in clubs, cards should not be played for money,” he said.
