Nine more night shelters to be opened

The Chennai Corporation will start a centre for counselling, preventive medicine and vaccination on the premises of the Communicable Diseases Hospital, Tondiarpet, for the benefit of persons travelling abroad. Vaccination certificates would be issued by the centre.

This was announced in the civic body's budget for 2011-12, which was presented on Tuesday. Healthy city project of the World Health Organisation would be implemented with public participation. The services of freezer box and hearse vans would be outsourced and would be available at the zonal level.

Nine more night shelters would be opened for pavement dwellers. An old age home would be opened in north Chennai.

Two places would be identified for cremation of pet animals. Two burial grounds each for Christians and Muslims would be inaugurated.

Reverse Osmosis plants would be installed in all 24-hour emergency obstetric centres to provide potable drinking water. Cryocautery equipment would be procured for all health posts.

Five more catamarans would be procured for anti larval and mosquito control programmes.
