A Nigerian national who cheated a 58-year-old man of Rs. 13 lakh after promising to deliver huge prize money won in an online lottery was arrested by the Chennai Suburban Police here on Friday night.
The suspect O. David Wilson alias Olabagi (30) of Oyo State in Nigeria along with another accomplice had made Sathaiyan of Mangadu believe that he had won 5.5. lakh pound in an online lottery.
According to the complainant, he received an SMS on August 18 which congratulated him for winning the prize valued at about Rs. 4 crore. Soon after he replied to an email address mentioned in the message showing willingness to receive the prize, one Harry Scott claiming to be calling from the United Kingdom told him that a “Diplomat” named David Wilson would come to New Delhi to deliver him the prize consignment box.
Under the instructions of Harry Scott, Sathaiyan deposited Rs. 50,000 in the name of Manoj who had an account in a nationalised bank at New Delhi towards courier charges. A couple of days later, David Wilson called him saying that he had arrived New Delhi and required Rs. 1.5 lakh urgently for getting customs clearance. The money extracting technique went on till the victim paid Rs. 13 lakh.
On September 14, David Wilson came to the residence of Sathaiyan and handed over the prize consignment box. When opened, it had several wads of black paper. The accused told him that the money was given a black coating to avoid action by law enforcing agencies and a solution had to be bought to restore the originality. For purchasing the solution, he demanded Rs. 32 lakh.
At this point, Sathaiyan sensed foul play and gave a petition to the Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R. Jangid who formed a special team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Gangster Team) to investigate the complaint. Since the accused was in constant touch with the victim over phone, the team took cues from mobile tower locations and apprehended him in a house at Rajakilpakkam.
Besides several wads of black papers, police seized a laptop, fake US Dollars and mobile phones from the house. “We are sending a special team to New Delhi to freeze all the accounts in which Sathaiyan deposited money. A search is on to locate the associate of David Wilson. People should ignore messages of emails informing them of such prize money and also alert the nearest police about it,” Mr. Jangid said.
The accused was produced in a court and remanded to judicial custody, police sources added.
