NIEPMD recommended for centre of excellence

The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities in Muttukadu has been recommended for the status of national centre of excellence.

The recommendation was made by Awanish Kumar Awasthi, joint secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities at a function held in the institute on Friday.

A proposal to this effect had already been sent to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Mr. Awasthi told Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot. The institute, set up in 2005, is in its 10th year, currently.

Mr. Gehlot was in the city to inaugurate an athletic track and an art exhibition at the institute and to distribute sewing machines to the parents of the children studying at the institute.

The sports track will be used by children to play handball and shot put. An information, communication and technology laboratory for adult children was also inaugurated.

Theme

The theme of the art exhibition was inclusiveness of persons with disability in mainstream.

The Minister also distributed wheelchairs to persons with disabilities and laptops to 53 students doing professional courses. Senior officials of the institute participated in the function.

In the evening, the minister participated in a function organised by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation where he distributed the Mahaveer awards for excellence in human endeavour in fields such as non-violence and vegetarianism, education, medicine and community and social service.
