NGOs step in to provide relief in rain-ravaged areas

While Chennai is struggling to survive the flood, various Non-Governmental Organisations have stepped in to provide relief work and materials to help the victims.

The APJ Abdul Kalam Vision India Movement distributed relief materials to flood-hit victims in Chennai and Cuddalore districts in the last three days. V. Ponraj, Scientific Advisor to the former President, said hours after he made an appeal on Facebook, several educational institutions, government officials, NGOs, philanthropists and others from across Tamil Nadu responded and contributed relief materials worth Rs. 50 lakh. A portal  www.chennaisos.com  was launched jointly by the movement and UK Tamil Sangam. People who had access to internet entered the requirement online and the relief materials were delivered to the needy.

Southern Railway Mazdoor Union general secretary N. Kanniah led a team of railway employees and distributed food, clothes and medicines to people affected by floods in northern parts of the Chennai.

Similarly, Lions club of Periamet, Porur and Tiruchy on Sunday distributed five tonnes of rice, 500 litres of milk, 500 kg of sugar besides biscuits, nighties, lungies and saris in Sidco Nagar, Villivakkam through its volunteers. Another city-based NGO Bhumi has engaged 200 volunteers for the relief work besides helping to transport few tonnes of relief materials.
