Expressing the hope that the Marina beach here would soon be recognised as one of the best stretches of beach in the world, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced here that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would inaugurate the beautified Marina on December 20.
Distributing appointment orders to 140 Chennai Corporation employees here on Saturday, he said that around 85 per cent of the work meant for the making of a ‘singara’ Chennai had been completed. As part of the Rs.25.92-crore beautification project, the Corporation has created new pathways, landscaped lawns, service lanes and seating space for visitors.
In order to spread out the thousands of visitors who are expected to come here each day over a length of 3.1 km from the Labour Statue point to the Light House area, 14 galleries had been constructed.
The construction of a four-metre-wide internal walker path along the sands, stainless steel pergola fountains along the beach and state-of-the-art lighting arrangements are other attractions. Additional parking space for buses, cars and motorcycles has been created.
As a part of the beautification process, the government had banned the use of plastics on and around the beach.
The Adyar Eco Park will be completed by November 2010, Mr. Stalin said. Other infrastructure development works and the restoration of the Cooum river would contribute to the making of a beautiful Chennai, he said.
Mayor M. Subramanian and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni participated in the event.
