Newborn found dead near tracks

May 05, 2013 03:25 am | Updated 09:12 am IST - CHENNAI:

The body of a newborn girl was found amidst bushes near the railway tracks at Perungalathur station on Saturday morning.

The Peerkankaranai police said a couple of young men, who were walking by the lane parallel to the tracks between Perungalathur and Tambaram stations, saw a pack of dogs fighting over something in the bushes.

They chased the dogs away, and when they saw the body, called the police control room.

Police officers who were on patrol nearby took the body to the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet.

As of yet, the police said, they have no idea who might have abandoned the baby. It is still not clear whether the baby was stillborn or died soon after birth.

The police said the mother probably gave birth to the child early on Saturday, as the umbilical cord was still in place.

Further investigations will be carried out after the post-mortem examination.
