Additional director general of police (law and order) Sebastian George, who has been posted as the new commissioner of police in Chennai, played a crucial role during the anti-nuclear plant stir at Kudankulam and personally supervised security arrangements by camping there.
He also played a pivotal role during the Mullaperiyar dam protest and contained the situation despite some sections of protesters demanding that he be taken off the assignment since he hailed from Kerala.
The conflict veteran, decorated with the President’s police medal in 2010 and the Chief Minister’s medal for excellence in public service in 2004, now brings his expertise to handling the city’s law and order.
Mr. George, a 1984-batch officer of the Indian Police Service, is an engineering postgraduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He hails from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and began his career with the Tamil Nadu police in 1987 after being posted as assistant superintendent of police, Ramanathapuram.
During his tenure in the State, he pursued an MBA followed by an M. Phil at New York University, an Ivy League institution, between 1995 and 2000.
He was with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption thrice, and occupied the positions of deputy director and joint director. He was also joint commissioner, Chennai Central, from 2001 to 2002. He served as inspector general of police, north zone and central zone, and held other key positions before being posted as ADGP (law and order) after the AIADMK came to power last year.
Mr. George was also instrumental in forming anti-land grab cells in all districts in the State which led to a crackdown and return of land to the rightful owners.
