New research to combat heart diseases

April 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

In an attempt to treat heart diseases using traditional methods and also study if genetic abnormalities can cause such diseases, Frontier Lifeline Hospital and Moscow-based The Institute for Atherosclerosis Research signed a collaborative research agreement on Thursday.

Sanjay Cherian, vice-president of Frontier Lifeline Hospital, said the main purpose was to find if chromosomal or genetic abnormalities can cause atherosclerosis; then, subsequently, develop ways to tackle these diseases.

“We want to move away from western forms of medicines and look at natural therapies. For instance, our research team has identified an anti-diabetic juice which we are in the process of patenting. Similarly, we want to come up with natural medication to combat heart diseases,” he said. The study will look at 500 patients over two-three years, he said.
