The new buildings at the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet are expected to be ready for occupation by May next year, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Friday.
Coming up on around 8.5 acres, the new facilities with a built up area of 10,197.71 sq. m are being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.19.70 crore. The buildings will house a block each for diarrhoeal diseases, air-borne infectious diseases and fevers. Separate buildings for the administrative block, laboratory, kitchen, mortuary and laundry are also coming up.
In addition, an outpatient block and a park would also been developed in the hospital, which is 96 years old, the Mayor told media persons, after reviewing the status of the work. The civic body's officials, including its Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, accompanied him during the visit to the construction site.
Explaining that the expansion was necessitated as the hospital received around 1,000 outpatients every day and admitted several hundred persons for various infectious diseases, he said so far, around 1,500 persons had been treated for swine flu. An allocation of Rs.21 crore had been made for the project.
The civic body is surveying plots in south Chennai to build a hospital on the lines of the CDH, Mr.Subramanian said.
Work on Cochrane Basin Road bridge had not been taken up as the owner of a house in the area had obtained a stay order. On the status of the subway near Stanley Hospital, he said the quality of soil was delaying the project. By June the subway would be ready.
