A 59-year-old neurologist, >who was brutally hacked by three men at R.A. Puram on September 14, died in a hospital early on Monday after failing to respond to treatment for over a week. The suspects in the case, now booked for murder, are on the run.
S.D. Subbiah, a resident of Thoraipakkam, retired as professor of neurology from the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in July. He was employed as a consultant at a private hospital on TTK Road.
Abhiramapuram police sources said the attack took place around 5.07 p.m. when the doctor was walking from the hospital towards his car parked on 1 Main Road, C.P. Ramaswamy Road. One person of the trio that was on a motorcycle approached Subbiah and started to hack him a sickle while another joined him in the act. The attack was captured on a CCTV camera installed nearby.
Following the attack, Subbiah was rushed to the hospital where he worked and later shifted to its branch in Shenoy Nagar, Aminjikarai. Police investigations revealed that a property dispute between a relative and the victim led to the attack.
Abhiramapuram police registered a case of attempt to murder and suspected the involvement of five persons including an advocate. Last Tuesday, an attempt by the police to apprehend Fasil, a lawyer, who is also one of the suspects, led to a group of advocates assaulting sub inspector Shankaranarayanan, who was part of the police team. The incident took place at the Madras High Court. The sub inspector was arrested and remanded to custody.
Following the doctor’s death, Abhiramapuram police altered the case to murder. A search is on for suspects Annappazham, Ponnuswamy, Mary Puspam, Fasil and Boris, sources added.
