The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in association with Tamil Nadu Neonatology Forum (TNNF) will hold a three-day conference on neonatology from November 19.
According to a JIPMER official, the conference would include a full day preconference workshop on neonatal resuscitation programme and three parallel workshops on newborn nursing, neonatal ventilation and neuro-development evaluation.
The workshops would be followed by a continuing medical education programme on November 20.
About 500 experts, including neonatologists, paediatricians, medical practitioners and nurses, from across South India will participate in the conference.
Data provided by JIPMER said that an estimated four million babies die in the neonatal period across the world every year. Of the total neonatal deaths, India accounts for one-forth with 0.9 million babies dying annually. The reasons for such high number of deaths include lack of any key survival interventions such as skilled care at birth, initial breastfeeding within one hour of birth, prevention of infections and care of low birth weight babies.
Eminent national faculty will participate in the conference and throw light on a number of problematic areas in neonatology and its management, the official said.
