Neem for mosquito control

The Corporation plans to use alternative bio-insecticide neem extracts for mosquito control operations. At the council meeting, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy announced the implementation of eco-friendly alternatives to insecticides.

Pyrethrum, the most widely-used botanical insecticide for mosquito control in Chennai, is also derived from the flowers of a plant in the genus Chrysanthemum. But the mosquitoes are said to have developed resistance to the insecticides now. The civic body recently short-listed neem as an eco-friendly alternative.
