Speakers at a seminar on ‘Rethinking business management through green practices,' urged the students to reduce carbon footprint to protect the environment and make the earth a safe place to live in.
Delivering the inaugural address at a seminar organised by the Department of Management Studies (DoMS), Anna University, here on Thursday, Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan said it was the duty of every citizen to protect the environment as it would pave way for economic growth and well being of society. The need of the hour was to develop the economy without disturbing the ecological balance.
Factors such as huge population, multiplicity of vehicles, large-scale use of pesticide, wastes of nuclear power plants, plastic waste, deforestation and emission of poisonous gas from factories were the main factors that had adverse impact on environment. “Environment can be saved by planting more trees, managing industrial waste effectively, using natural resources, solar energy, avoiding personal vehicles and creating awareness. Presently, India is ranked fourth in the list of countries that ruins the world environment. We all should strive hard to make India a green country,” he said.
In his presidential address, P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, called for use of wind and solar energy and asked the students to resolve to think green and be mindful of and sensitive to the natural environment.
Energy efficiency should be the hall mark of all future devices. Computers made from recycled material with components designed for easy recycling should be thought of. Designing of buildings to harvest natural light to meet the lighting requirement should be in the forefront. Incandescent bulbs should be replaced by compact florescent lights, he said. To mark the occasion, Mr. Anbarasan released the placement brochure 2010 and the first copy was received by Mr. Jawahar. It gave the details of 70 students.
