Counsel for Nalini, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Saturday sent a notice to the Prison authorities stating that harassment by prison officials had assumed various dimensions following her complaints against them.

In the notice to the Additional Director-General of Prison (ADGP), Chennai, counsel M.Radhakrishnan said Ms. Nalini had made a complaint on April 6 to the ADGP through the Superintendent, Special Prison for Women, Vellore, describing in detail the harassment she suffered at the hands of prison officials. On April 8, she made a representation requesting that she be transferred from Vellore to Puzhal prison.

She sent a further complaint to the ADGP dated April 12 pointing out “several illegal activities which were going on in the said prison for a long time and seeking immediate action against a vigilance officer of the prison and some convict warders.”

The notice said no action was taken by the ADGP on Ms. Nalini's complaints and representation until April 20 when a mobile phone was alleged to have been seized by prison officials from her cell. “It may not be out of place to state that harassment of my client by the prison officials assumes different dimensions in the wake of her complaints against them.”

A copy of the notice was sent to the Home Secretary.
