N. Nandakumar, who retired as a Deputy Editor of The Hindu in 2002 after a career spanning 39 years, died at his home here on Wednesday. He was 77.
Joining The Hindu in 1963 after a stint in The Mail, he served on the editorial desk. From 1989 until his retirement in 2002, he was part of the team that gave shape to the Sunday Magazine and Young World supplements.
When The Hindu launched the Newspaper in Education programme as an editorial initiative in 1999, he was actively involved in it. He was a part of the teams behind the annual Young World painting competitions.
Known for his language abilities and editing skills, he invariably enlivened the workplace. After retiring from The Hindu , he took up another journalistic position, and was active until recently when he suffered a heart attack.
Mr. Nandakumar is survived by his wife, Dhanalakshmi, and two sons.
